The blue WA receives a pass just inside the centre third and then pushes the ball into the nearby blue C's chest. The red WD has no ability to deflect or intercept the ball as it is passed.
The umpire calls short pass against the blue WA and awards a free pass to the red team where the ball was caught by the blue C.
Explanation
When a player passes the ball there must be sufficient space on the court for an opposing player to be able to deflect or intercept the ball as it moves from the hands of the passer to those of the receiver. With virtually no space between the blue WA and the blue C, the requirement in Rule 12.1 is not met, so a free pass is awarded to the non-infringing red team.
