Immediately after a goal, the umpires indicate the next centre pass to the blue team. The red C appeals to the controlling umpire, claiming it is their centre pass.
The controlling umpire should hold time and the bench-side umpire should ask the scorers for a centre pass check. The bench side umpire should confirm which team should take the next centre pass. The controlling umpire restarts play.
Explanation
Because the appeal came from an on-court player before the whistle, Rule 8.5(c) requires the umpires to check with the scorers and correct the decision. If these appeals were to become overly frequent or frivolous, the umpires could consider penalising the team for delaying play.
Relevant Rules
Rule 8.5
Immediately a goal is signalled, both umpires and the reserve umpire indicate the direction of the next centre pass, and the controlling umpire calls the name of the team to take the centre pass:
If they disagree or are in any way unsure, the umpires must seek clarification from the scorers.
If both umpires indicate the centre pass direction incorrectly, the scorers notify the umpires by electronic and/or audible means prior to the centre pass being taken.
On appeal from an on-court player prior to the centre pass being taken, the umpires will check with the scorers and confirm the correct team to take the next centre pass.
